Midjourney gives architects a fast way to explore atmosphere, material language, massing character, landscape relationships, and presentation styles before a BIM model is mature. It does not produce reliable dimensions, code compliance, structure, energy performance, accessibility, or a coordinated construction design. The safest use is explicitly conceptual: generate alternatives, identify a direction, then rebuild and validate it in architectural tools.
Choose the right subscription and privacy level
Midjourney typically offers Basic, Standard, Pro, and Mega subscription tiers with different amounts of fast GPU time, relaxed generation availability, concurrency, and privacy-related features. Current pricing and terms change, so check Midjourney’s official plan comparison before subscribing. For occasional competitions or mood exploration, Basic may suffice. Standard is more practical for sustained iteration because relaxed generation reduces pressure to conserve fast time.
Client confidentiality changes the calculation. Start with massing families, not a final render

A rendered timber soffit may conflict with fire, durability, pest, or insurance requirements.
AI images frequently blend materials at corners, eliminate drainage, vary mullion spacing, and create impossible cantilevers. Zoom in and mark every unresolved junction. Never send an AI image to a contractor as a detail.
Use image editing for targeted alternatives
Midjourney’s web editor and variation tools can help change a region, extend the frame, alter materials, or explore nearby compositions depending on current features. Make one change at a time: replace the screen material, lower the roof profile, increase shade, or reduce glazing. If several variables change, the team cannot identify what improved.
Maintain a contact sheet with prompt, seed or job reference where available, version, and a one-sentence evaluation. Star only directions that answer the brief. Delete or archive the rest after the decision; thousands of uncurated images slow review and make provenance hard to manage.

Create consistent views from the public approach, entrance threshold, primary interior, courtyard, and a human-scale edge. Aerial hero images favor formal gestures and hide experience. Specify pedestrian eye level and ordinary occupancy, including mobility devices, children, maintenance, deliveries, and weather when relevant.
Use the images as prompts for design questions: Is the entrance legible without signage? Where does rainwater go? Is there shade at midday? Can a wheelchair follow the depicted route? Does the glazing create glare? What is visible after dark? The answers come from the model and analysis, not the generation.
For client workshops, show a small number of controlled comparisons and ask about qualities rather than objects. “Which edge feels more welcoming, and why?” is useful. “Which building do you want?” invites approval of fictional geometry.
Integrate with the formal design process
After concept selection, translate decisions into a design-intent register. Each line records the concept image, desired quality, responsible discipline, verification method, and status. A shaded arcade might require solar study, structural bay review, drainage, fire strategy, cost planning, and accessibility checking.
