This isn’t really an either/or — Google Search Console and Ahrefs do fundamentally different jobs, and serious SEOs use both. GSC tells you how Google actually sees and ranks your site (and it’s free); Ahrefs tells you what your competitors are doing and where the opportunities are (and it’s paid). Here’s exactly what each does best, so you know which to open for which question.
What Google Search Console does best (free)
Google Search Console is first-party data straight from Google — no other tool can replicate it. It shows your real impressions, clicks, average position, and the actual queries you rank for, plus indexing status and Core Web Vitals. If the question is “how is my site performing in Google,” GSC is the only true answer.
What Ahrefs does best (paid)
Ahrefs (Lite $129/month) is third-party competitive intelligence — it shows competitors’ backlinks, their ranking keywords, content gaps, and keyword difficulty across a ~19-billion-keyword database GSC simply doesn’t have. If the question is “what should I target and who’s beating me,” that’s Ahrefs.
The key difference
GSC is retrospective and first-party (what already happened on your site); Ahrefs is competitive and forward-looking (what to do next, based on the whole market). One has Google’s real numbers; the other has the competitive map.
GSC vs Ahrefs at a glance
| Google Search Console | Ahrefs | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Free | $129/mo (Lite) |
| Data type | First-party (your real Google data) | Third-party (competitive) |
| Best questions | “How is my site doing?” | “What should I target / who beats me?” |
| Competitor data | No | Yes (backlinks, keywords, gaps) |
| Keyword database | Only your own queries | ~19B keywords |
A real scenario
You notice traffic dropped. Open GSC first — it shows which queries and pages lost impressions and position, the real Google-side story, for free. Then open Ahrefs ($129) to see whether a competitor gained the backlinks or content that overtook you, and what to do about it. GSC diagnoses; Ahrefs prescribes. Every site should have GSC set up (free); add Ahrefs when you’re competing for rankings, not just monitoring them.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Ahrefs if I have Google Search Console?
They do different jobs. GSC (free) shows your real Google performance; Ahrefs ($129) shows competitor backlinks, keywords, and gaps. Start with GSC; add Ahrefs when you need competitive intelligence.
Is Google Search Console enough on its own?
For monitoring your own site’s health and queries, yes — and it’s free and irreplaceable. It can’t show competitor data or keyword opportunities beyond what you already rank for; that’s where Ahrefs comes in.
Which has more accurate data for my site?
GSC — it’s Google’s own first-party data. Ahrefs estimates traffic and rankings; GSC reports the actual numbers. Use GSC for truth about your site, Ahrefs for the competitive picture.
